The Louis I bridge connects the city of Porto with the Vila Nova de Gaia. The reconstruction of the existing bridge, following a tender, was entrusted to Teophile Seyrig, who at the time was working with Gustave Eiffel. It was the largest bridge of its kind when it was built. Today the subway crosses the upper part of the bridge and pedestrians and vehicles cross the lower part of the bridge. It has been designated a cultural heritage monument by IGESPAR since 1982 and remains one of the most impressive sights in the city.
